Master Students-Centered Study Days on Research Methodology

12 november 2014

It seems appropriate at this juncture to explain the difference between research method and research methodology. The former may be understood as all those methods/ techniques that are used in conducting research. The latter refers to a systematic way to solve a research problem. In other words, it may be understood as a science of studying how research is done scientifically. Many people are put off by the word research (Mackey and Gass, 2007, p. 1), mainly those who are novice in the field. To help Master students gain a comprehensive understanding of some concepts related to research methodology, a three part-series of study days stretched on the three semesters will be organized. They aim is to help students gain an advanced understanding of a range of research concepts, as well as the skills needed to prepare and present research.

  1. 1.First Study Day: Exploring Research Proposal Components
  2. Title page/ Cover page
  3. Research variables
  4. literature review
  5. Statement of the problem
  6. Aim/ Objectives
  7. Research questions and hypotheses
  8. Research Method ( this will be left for the second study day)
  9. Sampling
  10. Research tools

This is the first part of a three part-series- a one-day mini conference aims at helping students gain a comprehensive understanding of the different components of a research proposal and how to develop it. It is always advisable to consider the research proposal as a first step to advancing your future career and not writing a research proposal for its own sake.

A crucial part of a Master or PhD application is the research proposal. This requires from the researcher careful planning and organization. Writing a research proposal needs a lot of patience and hard work. After choosing a topic, he has to analyze the subject matter, the aim and the objectives and to choose the right method and tools to be used. Then, selecting the way of analyzing the data is important before preparing the research draft. It is a whole process; the researcher cannot be successful if he simply starts work and then finds where it leads. An important factor which also makes it vital to plan is the time limit. Therefore, writing a research proposal depends on a number of factors. Before the researcher starts, it is important that these factors are explored and identified.

This Master student and teacher forum will be hosted by the Department of Foreign Languages, Section of English on November 12th, 2014. Researches are invited to submit both abstracts and papers online to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Deadline: by 20 pm, October 30th, 2014.

Notification of acceptance: November 3rd, 2014

Types of presentations: oral presentations and posters.

Oral presentations of 15 minutes each followed by a discussion of 10 minutes.

Posters sessions (1 hour) allow for short discussion with other participants while the exhibit is on display. The exhibit needs to be presented on a display board; it includes the title, the name, institutional affiliation of the presenter (s), the abstract and a brief text with clearly labels, photos, drawings, graphs or chart.

Tracks of the Study Day: Research Proposal Components

A research proposal is intended to convince others that you have a worthwhile research project and that you have the competence and the work-plan to complete it. Generally, a research proposal should contain all the elements involved in the research process and include sufficient information for the reader to evaluate the proposed study. All research proposals should address the following questions: What do you want to accomplish? Why do you want to do it? How are you going to do it?

Participants can submit papers on the following:
